Join us for an evening with Amy B. Scher, Kiersten Hathcock, and Mark Pucci as they discuss the behind the scenes of writing true crime.
About this Event

YA author Amy B. Scher (The Unexpected Afterlife of Salon Rose), author and intuitive cold case medium Kiersten Hathcock (Little Voices), and former NYPD detective Mark Pucci – Kiersten's real-life “partner-in-crime” + co-founder of The National Institute for Justice and Law – will be in discussion to share their behind the scenes experiences of true crime, what TV shows get right (and wrong), and writing about M**der and other violence with dignity and grace.

Event includes a Q&A where audience members can ask all their burning questions.

Come find out:

  • How Amy turned real grief and loss into a darkly funny, life-affirming YA novel
  • How three friends with wildly different backgrounds—detective, medium, novelist—ended up in the same room
  • How intuition and evidence can work together in solving crimes
  • Why real detectives cringe at your favorite true crime show
  • Answers to your own burning true-crime questions, answered live in the Q&A

Amy B. Scher is a bestselling and award-winning author of six books translated into over 20 languages. Her work spans multiple genres but she’s currently celebrating her debut YA novel, A Coming of Age While Dead Story. The book was inspired by the worst week of her life, when her dad died and her younger cousin was murdered. Fifteen years later, her grief became this darkly funny novel. Described by Kirkus as “A sweet tale of life and death, offering like a hug to grieving readers,” Amy hopes it helps readers find meaning in loss — and also makes them LOL . She has been featured in Oprah Daily, The Washington Post, Good Morning America, CBS, Cosmopolitan, and more. Amy lives with her wife in New York City where they spend most of their time planning their next meals, next adventures, or watching another episode of The Golden Girls.

Kiersten Hathcock is a former TV marketing exec and TEDx speaker turned Shark Tank-winning, self-taught carpenter and furniture designer who built an award-winning furniture company out of her garage. Behind the scenes, however, she privately struggled to heal from childhood sexual abuse and survive narcissistic abuse while grappling with newfound later-in-life evidential mediumship abilities. This journey led her to pen her debut memoir, Little Voices: How Kids in Spirit Helped a Reluctant Medium Escape and Heal from Abuse (Post Hill Press/Simon and Schuster). She also co-founded The National Institute for Law & Justice (NILJ) nonprofit with retired NYPD Detective Mark Pucci. NILJ.org helps crime victims and their families, free of charge. Today, Kiersten is working with Hollywood producers on the screen adaptation of Little Voices and speaking to groups of all ages about how learning to trust your own intuition can help you escape and heal from abuse.

Mark Pucci is a highly decorated, retired NYPD Detective and co-founder of The National Institute for Law and Justice (NILJ). Mark's investigative experience while working for the New York City Police Department encompassed all facets of law enforcement from Vice, Narcotics, Illegal Firearms, Gangs, and other violent crime related investigations, to Special Operations Division, city-wide major-crime pattern identification, and the apprehension of many of the city's most wanted criminals. In Mark's creation of New York Private Detective Services, he has taken his vast investigative and professional experience in both the public and private sectors and created an investigative firm with the sophistication and technology of a large scale international firm, while maintaining a small-firm feel which provides personal, "one-on-one", hands on professional services to its vast array of clients both large and small.
