Bartlett is author of the Anthony Award-nominated true crime book The Alaskan Blonde, and the Gourmet Ghosts alternative guides to haunted bars, restaurants and hotels across Los Angeles. ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Johnny Carson famously joked about "beautiful downtown Burbank", and most people know it as the place that's over the hill from Hollywood, and home to many studios. It's a quiet and quirky suburban city - or so it seems. Award-winning author and journalist James T. Bartlett will discuss stories from his new book and show pictures, police files and the locations of some of Burbank's darker stories. In 1934 Nellie May Madison shot her husband and became the first woman to be condemned to death in California, while the 1953 murder of Mable Monohan inspired an Oscar-winning movie, but didn’t save Barbara Graham and her collaborators from the gas chamber. In the decades that followed, infamous offenders such as the “Dating Game Killer” and “Night Stalker” Richard Ramirez hunted for victims in the area, while slayings of detectives, private eyes and secret gamblers piled up in the cold case files - but now they can be seen in the book True Crime Burbank.
