TROUBLED WATERS:
PICTURES FROM A BLACK EXHIBITION
As part of Black History Month, the Forde Concert Series is excited to present “TROUBLED WATERS: PICTURES FROM A BLACK EXHIBITION” on Sunday, February 23 at 3 p.m., at Christ Church Riverdale, 5040 Henry Hudson Parkway East, Bronx 10471.
Produced by Negritude Theater Company, “Troubled Waters,” a music-drama, depicts moments in Black history through the lens of the Black American church in four acts: “Africa and the Crossing,” “Slavery and Christianity,” “Reconstruction,” and “The Civil Rights Movement and Present Day.” Anchored by Music Director George Francois on piano, with talking Djembe drums accompaniment, and curated by Artistic Director Angela Watson, vocalists and narrators present a richly diverse offering of poetry by Phyllis Wheatley, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou; vocal music from African and Black American secular and sacred traditions; excerpts from texts by Binyavanga Wainaina, Frederick Douglass, and Martin Luther King; and instrumental music by Kwabena Nketia, Margaret Bonds, and Samuel Barber. A reception to meet the artists follows.
Tickets are $35 on Eventbrite, or $40 general admission / $20 students at the door.
