Trois crayons is French, which literally translates to "three chalks." 18th-century old masters such as Rubens, Watteau, and Boucher made it popular. Artists have created beautiful, harmonious drawings using this method of only black, white, and red (sanguine) on slightly toned paper for centuries.
The trois crayon technique creates an illusion of more colors than what is actually used. By working with such a limited palette, the artist is pushed to use values and temperature relationships to bring out form and details. This technique can achieve exquisite results, but that doesn't mean you must have advanced drawing skills to get started. Adding one color to black and white is a fantastic way to begin exploring color and temperature. You will be surprised what you can create using only trois crayons!
