Internationally recognized trombonist, composer and musical pioneer Willie Colon was only 17 years old when he first took the world by storm with his debut album EL MALO. Born in the Bronx, New York of Puerto Rican parents, Willie would go on to sell over 30 million albums and win numerous awards, including 1 Grammy, 11 Grammy nominations; a Lifetime Achievement award from the Latin Recording Academy; induction into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame (2000) and the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In 2015, he was recognized by Billboard magazine as one of the 30 most influential Latin Artists of All Time. When he joined forces with Hector LaVoe, they collectively created some of the most memorable recordings that would eventually help define the Salsa genre. Additionally, his collaborations with Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Ismael Miranda and others solidified his status as a Latin music legend.Orquesta Classica has made their mark in SW Florida with their incredible band members whose music is representative of old-school Salsa Dura. They are often sought after for festivals, dances, and night clubs. As a throwback to the heyday of Salsa, their motto is “Old school salsa with a Touch of Class”. A perfect choice to pay tribute to a gentleman who contributed so much to the Salsa genre, the late great William Anthony Colon.
Your emcee and DJ for the evening will be Nancy Alonso. She is known as “The First Lady of Salsa”, an on-air celebrity for over 18 years and co-founder of Salsa Empire Radio, an internet salsa radio station.
