About this Event
The Jazz Nebula's Quartet, featuring Jon Day (piano) and John Reid (saxophone, flute, and clarinet), performs musical selections from renowned saxophonists Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter and more. Sonny Rollins is a jazz tenor saxophonist who is regarded as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians with compositions such as St. Thomas, Oleo, Doxy and Airegin that have become jazz standards. John Coltrane is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension over the course of his career as exemplified on his most acclaimed album A Love Supreme. Charlie Parker was a leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique, and advanced harmonies. Cannonball Adderley was a jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s who is perhaps best remembered by the general public for the 1966 soul jazz single "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy." Wayne Shorter recorded more than 20 albums as a bandleader and many of his compositions have become jazz standards, with his music earning 12 Grammy Awards.
Doors open at 1 pm and the show starts at 2 pm.
ThIs is the fourth concert in a series of six concerts presented by Jazz Nebula at Scarboro United Church for its 2025-26 season (The Great American Songbook, Horace Silver, George Gershwin, The Great Saxophonists, Cole Porter, and Thelonious Monk). See the coloured brochure below for more details.
