TRIBAL ABORIGINAL
A STUDY IN BAL ANAT MOVEMENT
with
A’ISHA AZAR
Time: 12:30pm-2pm
Cost: $20
Beginning in 1968, and during the 1970s and 1980s, Jamila Salimpour was the woman who inspired dancers throughout the western United States. Nearly everyone studied her style and all dancers were familiar with her troupe, Bal Anat. Bal is the French word for Dance and Anat was a Mesopotamian Mother goddess. Hence her company was named “Dance of the Mother Goddess”. Jamila was the originator of the first Middle Eastern inspired tribal dances in the United states and “Tribal” was the term she coined for their performances. Some of her basis was reality and some of what Bal Anat performed was Jamila’s own creative offering. Before Masha Archer, before Carolina Nericchio, before Rachel Brice, there was Jamila Salimpour. Our class will be a study in the movements of the dancers of Bal Anat and the origin of Middle Eastern inspired American Tribal dance.
A’isha has studied the dances of the Middle East and North Africa since 1974. She has taught and performed throughout the United States and in Western Canada. A’isha has a reputation for excellent teaching methodology and integrity in her work both on stage and in the class room. She founded Baharat Dance Company in 2004, and though she no longer performs for the general public, she still teaches classes and has students online from as far away as Europe.
