Comedian Trevor Noah was an unexpected addition to satirical news show

The Daily Show

after Jon Stewart's 16-year tenure. After all, he had only been a contributor for about one year, totaling only five appearances, at the time of his appointment. On top of that, Trevor was a South African-born black man who still retained his accent. Nevertheless, Noah took over

The Daily Show

and has proved a successful and competent host. He has been nominated and won several awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series in 2017. Despite producing daily episodes for much of the year, Trevor continues to perform stand-up for his fans, has written two books (

) and produced other programs. In addition, he has made appearances, including some cameos, on other series and podcasts.

Although Trevor's short career as a correspondent on

The Daily Show

might have made him an unlikely pick for a host, it's not surprising that the show would propel Noah into stardom. Former

correspondents have moved on to their own shows and successful acting careers, among them Steve Carell,

Stephen Colbert

, John Oliver and

Samantha Bee

. Noah's path differed from Carell's, Oliver's and Bee's, however. He started his comedy career in 2002 in his native South Africa, later moving to American and British talk shows after a warm reception from fans and critics. Noah performed a steady stream of comedy specials before eventually relocating to the US in 2011 and becoming a correspondent on

The Daily Show

. He shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. In fact, Noah will host

The Daily Show

until at least 2022.
