In 2008, Matt Sheehy took a job as a forester in the rainy and iconic logging town of Aberdeen, Washington. His new home – a remote and run-down cabin in the woods – was supposed to be the perfect place to reflect and write songs about a recent breakup and the devastating loss of his mother. But things have a way of taking unexpected turns in Aberdeen and it would take almost a decade for those songs, and the stories behind them, to be heard.
Aberdeen is now the third studio album by Lost Lander – the first in 4 years – and the band will play headlining shows in support. These full band shows come on the heels of Sheehy’s 2019 US tour of his critically acclaimed one man show of the same name that culminated in a New York premier at the Public Theater.
Sheehy acted as producer on the album and pulled together friends to resurrect songs from journals and demos from a period 10 years ago when lived in Aberdeen, Washington. It features performances by bandmate Sarah Fennell and longtime collaborators Drew Shoals (Train), Brent Knopf (EL VY, Menomena), Dave Depper (Death Cab For Cutie), Sean Flinn (Flinn), Sam Vance-Law, Scott Magee (Ural Thomas and the Pain), Dana Bouy (Akron/Family), and Justin Miller.
The songs recall his attempt to restart his life, record an album, and his entanglements with the Floods, an eccentric local family living near his isolated cabin in the woods. Casey, the family’s young mother, is a logger and the family’s primary breadwinner. Her husband, Andy Flood (or “Flood” as he prefers to be called), is obsessed with proving his worthiness despite his fragile disposition and increasing paranoia about mysterious events occurring in Aberdeen. Matt’s efforts to help the couple reveal terrible hidden motives and lead to discoveries about the nature of the multiverse.
The National’s Matt Berninger describes Aberdeen as…
“…a trip. Every time I thought I had it’s number it pulled out the rug and surprised me. Beautiful songs and a truly unbelievable story. Apparently all true.”

9:00pm New Move
New Move, led by Portland native Jesse Bettis, produces modern pop gems full of nods to pop’s past. In 2016, the band signed to Bug Hunt (Tender Loving Empire imprint), who released their eponymous debut LP. The LP proved to be a perfect vehicle for the band to explore their take on classic pop, while Bettis was honing his idea of the perfect song. On the record you’ll hear the band digging in, turning old tropes on their head, with new energy and overall pulling off a slick, hook-laden album.
The first single, “The City Life”, caught the ear of Eric Davidson at CMJ, who described the pulsing, anthemic ode to the grind of daily life, “Like if early Todd Rundgren was a disgruntled intern at Playstation’s soundlab, dreaming of fun in the sun somewhere.” Furthermore, the record cemented New Move’s reputation in Portland as a band to watch, with a growing fanbase and a loyal following.
In 2017, Bettis made a substantial pivot toward collaboration by producing New Move II: Back In The Habit. The record is a track by track re-production of New Move’s 2016 self-titled debut. The difference from the debut lies in its secret: alchemy. Teaming up with other artists, Bettis let them guide the creative process, re-interpreting the songwriting as their own and the results were indeed magical.
From Portland magazine, Willamette Week: “Bettis doesn’t just feature local talent on his songs, he allows them to make the songs theirs. Y La Bamba takes ‘When Did We Stop’ from plinky, optimistic doo-wop to sweeping, horn-topped Latin euphoria, while Chanti Darling totally reinvents straight-ahead rock ballad ‘The City Life’ with clubby R&B sex appeal. Radiation City’s take on ‘No One But Her’ could be easily mistaken for the last-ever Rad City song, with muted, loungey percussion and saxophone and thickly stacked harmonies relishing the runs between notes…It’s a manifesto on the unshakable virtues of classic pop, and it is solidly convincing.”
Back in the Habit marked a turn in New Move’s relationship with the Portland music scene. Allowing the space for others’ input has become an essential element of creativity for Bettis and New Move.
Their most recent release, Paradise Hotel, is a compilation of songs written by thirteen Portland artists. The comp was put together more like an album than a typical compilation with all of the bands recording new material, and allowing Bettis to take the creative helm in the studio as producer of the entire project. Nearly all of the featured bands have worked with Misplaced Screen Printing, a local company and co-creators of Paradise Hotel. “This comp is the next step in our evolution. We want collaboration to become our new habit. It just so happens these artists get their merch made through Misplaced, so the partnership just made sense.”
The band is also currently writing their next record and producing a series of comedy videos. Keep your eyes and ears peeled.
10:10pm Smokey Brights
Smokey Brights create ecstatic experiences. Whether you’re catching the band in a club or listening to their newest EP, Different Windows, Smokey Brights will have you dancing, singing, and falling in love by the second chorus.
Husband and wife front people Ryan Devlin (guitar, vocals) and Kim West (keys, vocals) lead by example. The pair embody their music, singing their hearts out and dancing so hard they leave their sweat on the stage at every show, all in the name of obvious and unabashed love. With drummer Nick Krivchenia and bassist/vocalist Luke Logan, Smokey Bright’s razor sharp disco grooves and three part vocal harmonies are lush and infectious. It was one of the band’s ecstatic shows in their hometown of Seattle that lead iconic grunge era radio station 107.7 The End to declare “Smokey Brights are the best band in Seattle right now.”
Smokey Brights caught the attention of indie powerhouse Freakout Records in 2016 and joined the Freakout family to release their sophomore LP, Hot Candy. They’ve recently followed this critically-acclaimed release with two EP’s, Come to Terms and Different Windows. Produced by British producer Sam Bell (REM, Weezer, Minus the Bear) the EPs have earned the love of college radio across the US, particularly Seattle’s own KEXP. (Check out their most recent in-studio performance with KEXP’s John Richards to see the band in action.)
Recently, Smokey Brights have brought their perfect blend of stoney NW rock and funky disco grooves throughout the US and abroad, headlining a European tour fall of 2019, a UK tour in the fall of 2018, performing at SXSW official in 2018 and 2019, and gaining a rabid fan base across time zones. In 2020 the band will release their much-anticipated third full length record.
