In Chastain Park, there’s a natural wonder simply known as The Witches Cave. Less than 100 years ago, sheltered by ancient trees and giant boulders, this site of ancient curiosities became a neighborhood park. This Urban Oasis not only provides a plethora of pollinator gardens and diverse array of tree species that create a rainbow like canopy in the fall, but also holds keys to Atlanta’s past with secrets written along the century old stonework. Chastain Park today is known as a North Atlanta gem with over 260 acres hosting jogging paths, playgrounds, tennis courts, a golf course, a public swimming pool, horse park, amphitheater, and more. The history of Chastain Park is long and winding, from hosting public alms houses, a grim prison farm, and being a catalyst of desegregation in the city to now being a community cornerstone of North Atlanta.About the Docent: Kent Watkins is a resident of Sandy Springs who enjoys hiking, biking and exploring new parks during their free time. He is experienced tour leaders supporting Trees Atlanta's mission by planting, pruning and sharing their love of trees with others.
