? NEW TREE TOUR!?
The biodiversity of trees and insects in Atlanta Memorial Park is broad. Docent Mary Lillian, an enthusiastic native plant gardnener and neighbor of Atlanta Memorial Park, takes you on a walk among the abundant life in this city park, as well as through stories of its historic past. The grounds covered in this guided walk includes a portion of the battlefield where the Confederate troops failed to repel advancing Union soldiers in July 1864. Atlanta residents donated this land to the City to create a war memorial in the late 1920s, and school children planted a forest on the land. Join Mary Lillian as she shares her stories of her neighborhood park.
The Atlanta Memorial Park Conservancy (AMPC) restores, enhances, and preserves Atlanta Memorial Park, making it a beautiful, connected, and sustainable urban greenspace for the enjoyment of all. Lend a hand at the AMPC and Trees Atlanta’s bi-monthly restoration volunteer projects.
About the Docent: This tour is led by Trees Atlanta Docent Mary Lillian Walker, a retired attorney turned native plant gardener. Mary Lillian has been a neighbor of Atlanta Memorial Park since 1989 and is particularly interested in how the Park's native plants and trees create a habitat essential to sustaining biodiversity and resilient landscapes.
