About this Event
Tree Canada, in collaboration with the City of Markham, is excited to celebrate National Tree Day (NTD), presented by BMO. This is the biggest NTD celebration yet, with events taking place during National Forest Week.
Join us at the Milne Dam Conservation area to plant trees and connect with nature!
Volunteers will help dig holes, plant, and mulch approximately 500 native trees and shrubs, along with 200 wildflower perennials to attract pollinators. You'll be guided by Tree Canada experts and experienced volunteers who will be on hand to support you and answer your tree-related questions. We’ll provide gloves and shovels—all you need to bring is your enthusiasm!
How you'll be making an impact
The goal of this free event is to restore forest cover to this area to provide habitat for wildlife, birds mammals and pollinating insects . Once the trees are planted, the areas will be left to naturalize.
The benefits of planting at this event are as follows:
- Robinson Creek is a tributary of the Rouge River in central Markham, upstream from Rouge National Urban Park.
- The park in Milne Dam is on the Rouge River. The trees will absorb & store carbon & water to combat costly climate change & flooding damages.
- The trees will improve human health by removing / filtering-out air and water pollutants.
- Enhance public parklands to provide shade and encourage healthy outdoor recreation & relaxation opportunities.
- Improve terrestrial habitat quantity & connectivity to support species at risk, biodiversity and ecological integrity.
- Improve habitat for trout, salmon and red side dace (Species at Risk) and aquatic life
The species being planted are all non invasive, native plants
