This workshop presents trauma-informed care and self-awareness where skills and techniques will be learned, practiced, and internalized. These focus on the internal processes that form foundations for developing empathy and promote highly engaging encounters.Participants will:
- Define trauma (SAMHSA), pathogenic approaches to care, salutogenic approaches to care, sympathy, empathy, and roadblocks to communication (Dr. Thomas Gordon's model)
- Understand how trauma shapes perception and communication patterns
- Identify internal cues: emotional activation, physiological stressors, threats, bias, and defensiveness due to personal trauma
- Introduction to mindfulness to favor intentional responses over instinctive reactions (e.g., trauma responses such as fight, flight, freeze, fawn, etc.)
- Learn and practice grounding exercises to maintain internal stability during challenging interactions (e.g., noodling, the 20/20/20 rule, body scans, anchoring exercises, and some breathing exercises)
- Differentiate presence, self-regulation, and boundary awareness in trauma-informed practice prior to including other individuals in communication
- Building habits of self-awareness that support clearer and safer decision-making
Note: This workshop is $45 for AZHC members and $60 for non-members. Lunch will be provided.
This opportunity is made available in part by the Department of Economic Security.
