1. Theoretical Framework for Understanding Trauma
- Defining trauma
- The impacts of trauma
- Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
- The difference between mental illness and a trauma response
- The window of tolerance model
- Fight, flight, freeze, faint, and fawn responses
2. Organizational/Systemic Forms of Trauma
- How organizational contexts can perpetuate trauma
- Characteristics of a trauma-informed/trauma-aware organization
- Organizational case studies in which participants identify problems and recommend changes based on a trauma-informed approach
3. Trauma-Informed Practitioners
- Specific examples of practice that perpetuates or exacerbates trauma responses
- Recognizing and responding compassionately to trauma responses
- The why and how of safety, trustworthiness, and transparency
- Empowerment vs. rescuing or paternalism
- Direct practice case studies which participants identify problems and recommend changes based on a trauma-informed approach
About the Facilitator:
April is a registered social worker, therapist, and mental health educator. April’s approach to facilitation is both trauma-informed and culturally responsive. She enjoys the interaction and engagement of facilitating and believes every opportunity to teach is an opportunity to learn.
