Trash to Treasure: A Kid's Composting Workshop
About this Event
Don’t throw that away! Bring it to class and leave with compost for your plants!
NEW! What happens to your banana peel after you throw it away? In this hands-on class, young scientists ages 8 to 12 will find out. Kids are invited to bring their own food or yard scraps from home (not required) and use them to build a real compost pile together, learning why the dirt needs to eat just as much as we do. They will explore the science of decomposition, discover the creatures and microbes that make it happen, and walk away knowing exactly how to turn their kitchen scraps into living soil. We will also experience what finished compost looks and feels like, so kids can make the connection between what goes in and what comes out.
What You'll Do:
- Contribute to a real compost pile.
- Learn the science of decomposition and healthy soil.
- Discover the browns to greens ratio through a take-home coloring sheet.
- See finished compost and understand what their scraps will become.
- Leave with a sample of finished compost and instructions for creating a bin at home.
$10 per child. You’re invited to bring up to one quart-sized zip bag of compostable scraps from home (not required). Acceptable items include fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, dry leaves, grass clippings, and small yard trimmings. Please do not bring meat, dairy, oily foods, or anything that has already begun to smell. “When in doubt, leave it out.” All materials provided.
NOTE: This event is indoors in our comfortable Classroom. To have the best experience, our space is limited to 24 children aged 8-12. You must register, and please include your child's name and age along with a cell phone number. Note that a parent or adult must accompany the child attending, and remain available during the class.
