Gabriel Mininberg is a saxophonist and composer based in Denver, Colorado. His music is inspired by outer space, short stories, and sculpture. He loves to play with world rhythms and film-inspired harmonies, and is interested in new ways of presenting music through multimedia performance. Recent recorded work includes an album-length composition, Double Quartet, featuring a string quartet and chordless jazz quartet. It premiered at the Yale Planetarium under animated graphics projected on the dome overhead.
At the Tongue River Artist Residency, he will write music for an ambient multimedia chamber piece that will be recorded at the TANK Center for Sonic Arts in Rangely, Colorado.
Gabriel currently performs with his jazz quintet, Daruma. They will tour the Southwest and Midwest this summer in support of their forthcoming release on Monk Music. As a musician, he has been awarded the South Arts Jazz Road touring grant and the artist residency at the Creative Center of Stodvarfjordur. As a musicologist, he was awarded the Lewis P. Curtis and the Charles H. Siegel fellowships for his field research on Sinhalese popular dance music in Sri Lanka.
Gabriel holds a dual B.A. from Yale University in Music and Astronomy. He grew up in the US, Mexico, Venezuela, and Guatemala, and speaks English, Spanish, and French.
