More information from TRU:
For two weeks in June, members of the TRU team and partners will travel nearly the entire state of Michigan purely on public transit - in our first-ever Round-the Mitten Transit Tour! We'll use local buses, passenger trains, lots of intercity buses, and even some ferries and bikes to travel all around the lower peninsula, and even into the UP. In total, we (tentatively) plan to visit Port Huron, Flint, Saginaw, Bay City, Alpena, Mackinac Island, St. Ignace, Mt. Pleasant, Marquette, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Benton Harbor, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Jackson.
Along the way, we'll meet with transit riders, community groups, local transit agencies, advocates, and civic leaders. We'll interview local riders and others about what parts of Michigan's transportation system works and what doesn't. We'll tour transit facilities.
We'll co-host events with local groups to discuss expanding transit connections around the state. We'll share our experience - including the joys and challenges - on social media and with local news media. And we'll invite interested groups to get involved in a new statewide transportation coalition, to help influence MDOT's long-range transportation plan, and more.
This adventure has been made possible by the Michigan Environmental Council's Eco Prize and the McKnight Foundation. Please help us connect with groups and community leaders in those communities! Contact [email protected] with introductions and suggestions. And stay tuned at DetroitTransit org for updates and events along the tour.
