About this Event

We are thrilled to welcome editor, writer and founder of BookBlast Ltd, Georgia de Chamberet, as host of The Translation Book Club here at Hatchards.

Meeting on the second Monday of each month, we will be discussing works of fiction in translation from around the world published in the last ten years. With the promise that the titles chosen by Georgia and Hatchards booksellers will be well-written, engaging storytelling, the book club aims to inspire reading for pleasure as well as illuminating cultures beyond our shores.

This month, the book club will be discussing Sayaka Murata's "Convenience Store Woman" translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori (published by Granta):

Meet Keiko. She's 36 years old, has never had a boyfriend, and she's been working in the same supermarket for eighteen years. Keiko's family wishes she'd get a proper job. Her friends wonder why she won't get married. But Keiko knows what makes her happy, and she's not going to let anyone come between her and her convenience store...

A cult hit around the world, Convenience Store Woman is both a feminist rallying cry and a must-read oddball comedy.

It's going to be an evening of brilliant discussion - Ruth Ozeki has described it as a "gem of a book. Quirky, deadpan, poignant and quietly profound" - do join us if you can!

Tickets include £3 off the purchase of "The Paper House" by Carlos María Domínguez, translated by Nicholas Caistor (Thousand Horsemen Press) for next month's meeting on Monday 12th October.
