Translating the Odyssey with Dr Doug McFarland
About this Event
Why is a sea described as wine dark? What is gained and lost moving a story between languages? How do we tell an epic poem in meter or on screen? Explore these questions and more with Doug McFarland at the Russian Hill Bookstore.
In the 8th Century BCE, Homer crafted a poem of greatness, capturing the human condition in the epic, The Odyssey. In the 2,500 years since, translators have worked hard share this text with a wider audience.
The Russian Hill Bookstore warmly invites you to voyage through the numerous translations and adaptations of the Odyssey with local scholar Professor McFarland. He will discuss the process of translating The Odyssey from Ancient Greek and read excerpts of his own translations.
This event is ideal for the casual reader, a scholar of the ancient Mediterranean, or anyone heading to the cinema to see Christopher Nolan's debuting film adaptation.
Doug McFarland previously taught English and Classics at Flagler College, Oglethorpe University, and Stanford University. He holds a PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley.
