About this Event
LOCATED ON WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
Trans people in the USA are facing an existential crisis. As anti-trans bills have increased 668% between 2021 and 2025, trans people have moved from a distraction – from the economy, Epstein files, corruption – to targets of discrimination of state and federal laws. The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention issued a “Red Flag Alert” on March 11th, 2026, as the US moves into “the early to middle stages of a genocidal process.”
This malicious – and deadly – influence is spreading throughout Canada as well. It’s not just reactionary governments in Alberta and Saskatchewan that are discriminating against trans kids, but in BC regressive conservatives are attempting to dismantle human rights protections, effectively enabling discrimination against queer and trans people. And if we choose to learn from history, we know that such political efforts never stop with just that one group — as we are seeing US Republicans target the broader queer community.
Dr. Hillary Pimlott explores some of the latest developments in disinformation campaigns on trans healthcare, school shootings, and attempts to eliminate BC’s human rights protections to see what kind of future there is for trans people in Canada.
