Traditional Shibori - Shin Ire - using a rope core - Studio based, full day

What will I learn?

Traditional Shin Ire (rope core) Shibori – learn traditional patterns of stitched and bound resist and dye your creations in indigo to achieve a range of beautiful blues.

This class will focus on using a rope core (Shin Ire) to expand the binding and stitching techniques you have learned and will give you several complete patterns which you can use for other projects.

Content:
– How to tie the basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work
– The quilters knot and the surgeons knot required for all stitched work
– How to make the Shibori starting and ending knots to create tight, crisp patterns
– How to prepare three traditional Shin Ire Shibori patterns:

Tesuji - "Stripes" - this is a pleated and bound technique that results in a pattern resembling stripes - mini project to practice binding without a core

Hinode - "Sunrise pattern" - this is a stitched and bound technique that results in a pattern resembling a series of sunrises. You will learn how to bind your piece around a core to produce a pattern with the traditional binding marks (shown top left)

Yanagi - "Willow pattern" - this is a Shibori binding technique that results in a pattern that looks like willow leaves (shown top right). You will learn pleating and binding around a core and make a traditional pattern with kumo spiderwebs
– How to dye your fabrics in a genuine indigo vat
– How to set up and maintain your own indigo vat at home

Who is this class for?: Intermediate / have done some Shibori before

Duration: Full day (6 hours)

Location: This class is only available at the Artist’s studio.

What do I need to provide myself?

• Rubber gloves (these must cover the wrist and should be Marigolds or similar)

• A strong plastic bag to take your wet work home in
• An apron/old clothes (as indigo will stain if splashed onto your clothes)

All fabric, thread and dye is included in this class. You are welcome to bring you own fabric to work on if you prefer. If so, it must have been scoured (washed with detergent) to remove any preserving chemicals or bought PFD (prepared for dyeing).
