The Trad Nua Celtic Series is pleased to host the duo of Ian King (Socks in the Frying Pan) and Tadhg Ó Meachair (One for the Foxes, Goitse) for an evening of top-class Irish traditional music, joined by some special guests.Ian King:
Ian's new album, "The King's Bow", is the culmination of a musical journey spanning the past 15 years. Having grown up in a Chicago community steeped in the Irish tradition, Ian began playing the fiddle at the age of 12 and never looked back. He has become a prominent musician on the professional scene in the United States and abroad, and he has toured extensively in the US, Europe, and Canada. He was part of the all-Ireland champion "Ceoltóirí Coillte", winner of the senior Grupai Cheoil competition at the all-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil, performing a set arranged by his former teacher, Stockton's Wing’s Maurice Lennon. For the past 3 years, Ian has toured the US with the multi-award winning band, "Socks in the Frying Pan".
Ian's music is deeply rooted in the Irish tradition, but draws on other elements of artistry and musicality in his unique interpretation of the music. His recent album reflects this interpretation, and features musicians from whom he has learned and with whom he has played throughout the US, the UK, and Ireland, including Maurice Lennon, John Doyle, Eimear McGeown, Roisin Broderick, and Tadhg Ó Meachair.
Tadhg Ó Meachair:
A graduate of the Irish World Academy at the University of Limerick, Tadhg has established himself as a force in the world of traditional Irish music. An All-Ireland piano title is among the various awards for piano, piano accordion, and accompaniment he has collected along his musical journey. As well as being a founding member of the multi-award-winning bands Goitse and One for the Foxes, he has performed on a variety of stages across four continents to huge crowds and esteemed audiences; from Ireland’s National Concert Hall to Music Crossroads in Zambia, and from the Festival Interceltique de Lorient to a garden party hosted by Uachtarán an hÉireann, the President of Ireland. Tadhg is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at Indiana University's Folklore and Ethnomusicology Department alongside his performance career.
