About this Event

From the Archives is a new series in which ABC RN’s Kate Evans is joined by a panel of experts on a different theme every two months to delve into a selection of incredible items from the Library’s collection. Get the chance to view some rarely seen items from the collection and hear some amazing stories behind the items.

Items from the Library’s collection reveal some fascinating and unexpected things about the lives of Australian writers. Explore some of the literary highlights at the State Library, from manuscripts to journals, personal collections to art collections, the life and work of some of our great writers including Ethel Turner, Mona Brand, Len Fox and Antigone Kefala can be traced through items in the collection.


Kate Evans is the co-host of ABC Radio National’s weekly literary review and interview program, The Bookshelf. She also contributes to other programs on the network, and regularly hosts interviews at writers’ festivals. She has a PhD in history and too many books, and regrets neither.

Sarah Morley is a curator at the State Library. She has worked extensively with the Library’s archival and printed collections. Focusing on manuscripts, rare books and children’s literature, Sarah's work encompasses collection acquisition, access, promotion and interpretation. She has curated numerous exhibitions and displays for the Library, most recently Imagine …the Wonder of Picture Books.

Sheila Ngọc Phạm is a writer, editor and producer. She is the curator of the current exhibition MÌNH at Fairfield City Museum and Gallery, which explores the Vietnamese and Chinese diasporas through the eyes of writers and artists. She previously curated an exhibition of Đông Hồ paintings for the State Library's Amaze Gallery, with the works drawn from Len Fox's and Mona Brand's extensive collection of Vietnamese art held by the Mitchell Library.

Maria Savvidis is a Specialist Librarian in the acquisition and curatorial branch of the State Library and President of Oral History NSW. She is passionate about contemporary collecting and diversity across formats, with a special interest in oral history interviews and artists’ books. Maria curated the Library’s 2019 display Stories in the Sun showcasing the golden age of Australian children’s picture book illustrations.
