Exhibition Statement
New York Asian Design Week (NYADW) is pleased to present Traces of Force, a group exhibition at Gallery 456 bringing together eleven artists whose work examines how structural, technological, emotional, environmental, and social forces shape material form and spatial experience. The exhibition presents nine works spanning architecture, painting, photography, installation, and furniture design. As the Physical edition of New York Asian Design Week’s two-year dialogue between the physical and the digital, Traces of Force approaches form not as a finished appearance, but as the record of an encounter. Across the works on view, materials bend, stretch, burn, settle, fracture, and resist. Bodies, identities, environments, and cultures are shaped through comparable processes. Across the exhibition, Asian design is not presented as a singular visual language or a fixed collection of recognizable motifs. Instead, it emerges through negotiations between precision and imperfection, inheritance and transformation, displacement and belonging, and technological acceleration and material resistance. The title Traces of Force refers to what remains after these encounters: an imprint, deformation, residue, fracture, or altered direction.
