We’re organizing these Town Hall Field Trips to give any resident a convenient way to see our local government in action.Here’s the idea:
Most people have never been to a local government meeting. And even those who want to go to one might not feel comfortable just showing up that first time. There can be a little bit of intimidation when you don’t know how things work and you’re walking into a government office. So we’re all going to go together. A big group of us.
We’ll meet up before-hand. We’ll get to know each other, talk about that meeting’s agenda, and what to expect. We’ll make sure people know how to make a public comment at the meeting, if they’re motivated to do that. We’ll go into the meeting chambers and sit together (so we can pass notes, like we did in high school). And afterward, we can chat some more if people have questions or ideas.
This field trip will take us to observe the Kalamazoo City Zoning Board of Appeals in action. We’ll meet at 6:45 p.m. for some brief discussion before taking our seats for the board meeting at 7 p.m. Though the meeting might go on later, the NowKalamazoo team will duck out at 9 p.m.
