About this Event
The former Southport Town Hall is a superb example of inter-war Civic Architecture. Constructed in 1935, it was sympathetically enlarged in the 1950s and again in the 1960s. Recent restoration and conservation works have allowed the former Town hall to function as a Council customer service centre and Councillor office.
The building is highly intact and retains nearly all of its original fabric. This is particularly evident in the 1935 Council Chambers, with its highly decorative detailing in the Art Deco ‘zig-zag‘ style. Externally, the strong verticality and symmetrical main façade of this Queensland State Heritage Register item makes an impressive and positive contribution to the streetscape of central Southport.
Post-war development has seen many Art Deco buildings disappear from Southport, which only adds to its rarity value and social significance as a civic building which has been open for public purposes for almost 90 years.
