About this Event
Join us for a tour of historic Algiers Point
Algiers, established in 1719, is the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans. Originally part of "King’s Plantation," it was where enslaved Africans were held before being sold in the French Quarter. Algiers was also home to the city’s powder magazine and slaughterhouse, which earned it the nickname Slaughterhouse Point.
Situated along the Mississippi River and directly across from the Vieux Carré, Algiers Point developed as an independent town while maintaining a small-town atmosphere. With its 19th-century charm, the neighborhood features historic structures, including Greek Revival and Creole cottages. Algiers fosters a diverse community of artists and professionals attracted by its cultural richness and affordability. Many residents have deep roots in the area, with generations of family homes contributing to its unique character.
