Exploring practical strategies in real-world examples, we'll see how tailored adjustments can create a more effective and inclusive mediation process, benefiting all participants and increasing the potential for productive outcomes.

Addressing Surprising Developments in Mediation There are challenges in mediation, and then there are surprising challenges. How do you react “in the moment” to unexpected developments? We’ll discuss some of our surprises and hear about yours as well, gleaning mediator skills for dealing with them as we go.

Responding to Professional Misconduct Which Occurs in Mediation Lawyers are obligated by MRPC 8.3 to report professional misconduct. How does that apply to attorney-mediators who encounter problem behavior from an attorney in mediation? As we look at a couple cases where attorney-mediators faced this dilemma, we will attempt to develop standards to guide us.

What Mediators Can Learn from the "Small Talk" Movement Mediators have learned a lot from different fields. This session will provide an opportunity to explore "Small Talk", an approach used in some communities to address suicide prevention, to see what it can offer mediators in developing connection and revealing the needs and interests of all participants.

Pre-Session Assignment. To obtain the full eight hours of advanced mediation training credit, attendees will need to complete a pre-session assignment. The assignment is budgeted to take only one hour to complete and merely requires trainees to consider and reflect on engaging videos and articles. Details will be sent upon registering.

SCAO Approval The Michigan State Court Administrative Office has been asked to approve this training for up to eight hours of advanced civil or domestic mediation training credits required to remain on court rosters. The full eight hours of credit consists of seven hours of in-class training plus one-hour of pre-session "homework."
