This season we are welcoming the Signature Sponsorship of a duo of stellar Wisconsin healthcare service providers: Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin and Network Health Wisconsin. Froedtert & MCW is a regional health network that offers care, innovation, research and education. And at Network Health, health insurance is what they do, even when it’s not easy.
Join me in welcoming both of them as Presenting Sponsors, too, for this kickoff to the 2024 season!
Opening the night will be Kelly Steward. Kelly Steward is a Midwestern American singer, songwriter and recording artist hailing from Rockford, Illinois. Her haunting indie-flavored neo-traditional country meditations are a favorite around her home—a grass-roots musical movement from the state that brought you Wilco. After a few storied years in Los Angeles, Kelly moved back to the Midwest to record her EP "Long Long Road" with producer, fellow musician, and husband Miles Nielsen (as in Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts who opened the 2023 season at Tosa Tonight).
Sticking with the singer/songwriter theme of the night, Tosa Tonight is thrilled to announce the return of one of Wauwatosa’s favorites: Trapper Schoepp. Trapper’s rained out 2017 show at the Hart Park Rotary Performance Pavilion is the stuff of legend. Like the Ice Bowl, more people have claimed to have stood under that pavilion roof while Trapper performed an impromptu and intimate show than possibly could have been there. Then he returned in 2018 with a blistering set of his own Springsteen-esque songs followed by an all-star cast of Milwaukee musicians for a Tom Petty tribute. Many of us remember it as one of Tosa Tonight’s fan favorites.
Since then, Trapper has been a prodigious artist. Currently touring Europe, in 2019 the Milwaukee singer-songwriter published a long lost song with Bob Dylan called “On, Wisconsin” – making him the youngest musician to share a co-writing credit with the Nobel Prize laureate. The song led to a #1 trending article in Rolling Stone and over a hundred tour dates worldwide.
More recently, Trapper is featured on the Siren Songs album cover posing in the same pond where Johnny Cash would read and dispose of letters sent to him by Bob Dylan, protecting a private correspondence and kinship that started in the sixties. At these storied grounds, Trapper recorded his strongest collection of songs steeped in traditional American and Irish folk music – aided by producers John Jackson (Jayhawks, Ray Davies) and Patrick Sansone (Wilco).
We cannot think of a better way to kick of another great musical Summer in Wauwatosa with these two dynamic artists. More importantly, we cannot wait to see you all back at the Hart Park Rotary Performance Pavilion. Be safe and we'll see you soon!
