About this Event

AI may generate predictable and forgettable writing, but it will never generate good or memorable fiction, non-fiction or poetry. That will always be a task for humans, as we bring characters, settings, voices and styles of expression to life.

The Toronto Writers' Cooperative is on a mission. We believe that the ability to write well and tell compelling stories will be more critical than ever in the coming decades. That is why we provide a supportive, safe and non-judgmental environment for all aspiring writers to share their evolving work, hone their technical skills, and enrich their creative practice with the benefit of wide-ranging feedback.

To join us, simply show up at the Toronto Reference Library on the first and third Sunday of the month. The first fifteen minutes, from 1:30 to 1:45, are dedicated to greetings and informal conversation. Afterwards, 1 to 2 writers will read pieces of up to 2,000 words. These are circulated by e-mail a week in advance of each meeting.

As the submitting writer, you can ask the group to address general or specific questions about your writing (such as how effectively the imagery works) or solicit particular suggestions, such as ways to make a character more realistic or relatable. In turn, other members will provide their comments and respond to your questions, offering constructive criticism and suggesting actionable edits.

If time permits, the second half of the meeting is dedicated to informal readings of pieces in earlier stages of development, or excerpts from larger works. These readings are shorter and are not circulated in advance.
