About this Event

Join us for an in-person discussion of More by Austin Clarke, the winner of the 2009 Toronto Book Award.

About the book:

Clarke's novel More features a mother struggling to come to terms with the news of her son's involvement in gang crime, as she "dissect[s] her life as a black immigrant to Toronto" in "a powerful indictment of the iniquities of racial discrimination and the crime of poverty... an extraordinary story about oppression and redemption and hope. From one of our masters of the novel form, this is very much a book for our times."

About the author:

Austin Clarke (1934-2016) was a "distinguished novelist and short story writer who has explored the immigrant experience with humour, compassion, happiness and sorrow. Through his prolific literary output he has recorded the changing face of the country, giving voice to the resilience, courage and loneliness often felt by people who come to Canada to start a new life. By his own example he has broadened the horizons for black writers, encouraging them to develop their creative talent." [Source] He was also the winner of a Giller Prize, a Commonwealth Prize, a Trillium Award, and a member of the Order of Canada.

Copies of the title are available to borrow in Print, Audiobook and eAudiobook format from the Toronto Public Library collection.

The discussion will take place in Founders' Room on the first floor of the Toronto Reference Library. You will find the Founders' Room just past the main entrance to Beeton Hall, on the right.
