Singers from the upcoming Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston production of The Gondoliers will perform before the movie screening of the 1999 British film Topsy-Turvy at the historic River Oaks Theatre on June 2.This musical period drama, written and directed by Mike Leigh, explores the creative conflict between playwright W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan and depicts their decision to continue their partnership, which led to the creation of several more Savoy operas. While the film primarily focuses on the production of The Mikado, it also depicts many aspects of 1880s British life and society, some of which are based on historical episodes.
Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston is the oldest opera company in Houston, now in its 75th season with the summer production of The Gondoliers, presented over four performances during the last two weekends of July at the Wortham Theater Center. Singers participating in the pre-movie performance include Richard Paul Fink, Meaghan Heath, Sean Holshouser, Kaitlyn Stavinoha, Riley Vagis, and Joe Carl White, with Andrew Schneider as accompanist.
River Oaks Theatre, is located at 2009 West Gray St., Houston, TX 77019. Tickets are $16, plus fees; there is a $2 discount for students, seniors, and military members
