Landscape can only be understood in the overall context of the built space. Based on this perspective, knowledge of adjacent subject areas and disciplines, as well as continuous dialogue, are elementary to the creation of a coherent and resilient common ground. At its heart, Topotek 1’s design philosophy is transdisciplinary; centred on translating concepts into forms that embrace not just a visceral sensuality and intellectual beauty, but also ensure a lasting sociological impact.
In the collective urban context of public spaces, our approach to Landscape Architecture establishes a forum to stage encounters between cultures, disciplines, and typologies, as well as between people and space, past and future, inside and outside, natural and built environments.
A central concern of Topotek 1’s work is the cooperative interaction and transfer between related subjects such as architecture, engineering, ecology, social sciences, and art that establish an interdisciplinary discourse on common ground. It provides the basis for the qualitative design of public spaces for progressive, sustainable societies. Creative Infidelities is an approach that reconsiders Landscape Architecture’s potential in the future.
Martin Rein-Cano is an award-winning landscape architect and founder of the architecture and landscape architecture practice Topotek 1, based in Berlin and Zurich. He was born in Buenos Aires and studied History of Art at Frankfurt University and Landscape Architecture at the Technical Universities of Hannover and Karlsruhe. He trained in the office of Peter Walker and Martha Schwartz before founding his practice in 1996. Topotek 1 partakes in a wide variety of international projects and has won numerous competitions. Several professional books and articles have been published exclusively on his work, which have been honoured with various awards and prizes.
Martin Rein-Cano has been appointed as a guest professor across Europe and North America. He frequently lectures at internationally universities and cultural institutions, and regularly serves in competition juries.
