Class Description

This course is a Tool Training for complete beginners looking to jump into how to use a domestic sewing machine! We encourage you to bring your own sewing machine to get comfortable with OR use one of the domestic sewing machines available in our fiber arts workshop.

We will cover the basics of machine operation, safety features, stitch styles, how to load bobbins, types of thread to use, needle types, machine capabilities and of course troubleshooting common issues.

Please note this course is for complete beginners (or those looking for a very detailed refresher) on how to safely operate a domestic sewing machine. Take this course as a pre-requisite to Tool Testing on domestic sewing machines in the Fiber Arts Shop and other sewing classes that require machine sewing.

Material Fee

The materials fee for this class is $9. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts payments in cash, through Venmo, or by credit or debit card.

Class Goals

Students will gain:

+Confidence and comfort with how to safely operate a domestic sewing machine (including all stitches the machine is able to do).

+Students will start by learning how to safely wind a bobbin, select and install the correct needle for their fabric type and start sewing straight lines!

+After comfort is established sewing straight lines, students will learn how to turn a corner and learn about the various stitches the domestics can achieve.

+From there, students can begin their stitch sampler, which will contain all of the stitches they've learned in class and their applications.

+Students will leave with their stitch sampler and the skills required to safely operate a machine (and troubleshoot any common issues that may arise) while working independently.

+Students can book their Tool Test at the end of class!
