A mother returns from the dead to confront unfinished business with her daughters, who are embroiled in their own emotional turmoil and entwined dramatics.
Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) and her sister Sole (Lola Dueñas) lost their parents in a tragic fire years ago...or did they? Superstitious villagers claim that the girls' departed mother, Irene (Carmen Maura), has been seen wandering around their Aunt Paula's home. When Irene appears to Sole, she explains that she has returned to set right her daughters' troubled lives and reveal shocking secrets that will impact everyone.
With a light directorial touch and the luminous performances that have come to be expected of his regular collaborators, this ranks as one of the Pedro Almodóvar’s (The Flower of my Secret) most mature works.
