Tony Tulathimutte: Rejection

In Tony Tulathimutte's Rejection, longlisted for the National Book Award, a set of linked stories on the theme of "rejection" become freak dispatches from the outer edges of contemporary experience. A try-hard male feminist radicalizes into a supernova of misogynistic rage; a love-scorned Thai-American man descends into extravagant pornographic fantasies; a delusional Redditor self-justifies his abusive relationship with an ex-girlfriend. In conversation with host Sarah Hagi, Tulathimutte will discuss his at turns hilarious and unnerving collection, which forms an all-too-real portrait of a lonely, terminally online generation seeking connection in an age of alienation.

Tony Tulathimutte is the author of Rejection and Private Citizens. His work has appeared in The Paris Review, n + 1, The New Yorker, The New Republic, and Playboy, and he has received a Whiting Award and an O. Henry Award.

Sarah Hagi's work has appeared in New York, GQ, The Guardian, and Esquire. She is co-host of the award-winning podcast Scamfluencers, and she lives in Toronto.
