Introducing Toi and Talk at Te Whare o Hinerauāmoa, an evening for artists to come together, connect with one another, listen to a guest speaker, and spend time working on their current toi projects.
Our next speaker is Jon Jeet.
Jon Jeet is a portrait artist, life drawing facilitator, and multidisciplinary creative based in Ōtautahi, Christchurch. Of Maniapoto and Fijian Indian descent, Jon holds a Master of Fine Arts and has been drawing for as long as he can remember. Drawing is the foundation of his creative practice and the thread that connects his work across painting, pounamu carving, sculpture, and community arts.
Jon is passionate about the simple yet powerful act of drawing another person. For him, the exchange between artist and subject is an expression of respect, presence, and connection. Through portraiture and life drawing, he creates spaces where people feel seen, valued, and acknowledged, believing that the act of careful observation is itself a meaningful gift.
Whether creating artwork, facilitating workshops, or working alongside communities, Jon sees creativity as a collective journey that brings people together. This philosophy sits at the heart of Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata; a community-based pounamu carving Kaupapa he leads which creates meaningful connections through toi and mātauranga Māori.
