Tobermory and Ledaig Whisky Tasting with Joe Ellis

Tobermory Distillery – The Spirit of Mull
Perched on the colorful waterfront of Tobermory , the picture-postcard capital of the Isle of Mull , Tobermory Distillery is one of Scotland’s most charming and characterful whisky makers. Founded in 1798 , it's one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland —and it wears its age with quirky pride.
 Two Whiskies, One Heart
What makes Tobermory truly unique? It produces two distinct styles of whisky under different names:
- Tobermory – an unpeated , fresh and fruity Highland-style single malt with coastal flair.
- Ledaig (pronounced Le-chig ) – a heavily peated malt that’s smoky, earthy, and bold, reflecting the wilder side of Mull.
It’s like the distillery has two personalities: one light and playful, the other dark and mysterious.
 Island Vibes in Every Drop
Tobermory’s whiskies carry the maritime essence of Mull: sea spray, salt air, and the rugged beauty of the Hebrides. They use water from the Mishnish Lochs , which adds a soft minerality to the spirit.
Their cask finishes—like sherry, port, and even wine—add rich depth and complexity to both styles.
 Fun & Quirky Facts
-The distillery was once called Ledaig , the original name of the site—and the name still lives on in their peated whisky.
- Mothballed several times in its history, Tobermory has made multiple comebacks, most recently reopening after a major renovation in 2019 .
-The town of Tobermory is famous for its brightly colored houses —and if it looks familiar, it might be because it starred in the kids’ show Balamory !
-The stills are small and squat, giving the whisky a fuller, oilier texture—part of Tobermory’s signature style.
