A group of artists who met in Grand Rapids are joining together to create a unique and memorable art experience during the month of July at the DAAC. The Division Avenue Arts Collective, referred to as the DAAC, is an all ages open source creative space that is available for anyone to rent and use for events including art shows, music performances, workshops and markets. What started as an idea to celebrate a milestone birthday for Creston-based artist Kate Lewis, evolved into a collaborative effort to create something unique together. Within a couple months a team of artists has assembled to transform the space with their creations, build community, uplift the DAAC, the Creston Neighborhood and our dear friends Nikki and Asiah (https://gofund.me/f3521f62) who will be the beneficiaries of a silent auction that will take place during 'To Make A Room: a mid-career view into Kate Lewis featuring collaborations'.
The opening reception will be Friday July 5 from 6pm-9pm with a soundscape curated by Mellow Velvet Productions (Pharaoh Muhammad Khalil) and Reel J (Hugo Claudin/Mexicains Sans Frontieres). Other participating artists include Brandon Copeland (Dante Cope/Grammotones) curating projections of past and current film/photography and Cyan Oren Nomi adorning the space with Spectral Swamp Creations. Additional contributing visual artists include Stephen Smith, Prince Dillard (Tokyo Dreams/AntiLabel) and Laurel Dugan.
A community jazz and coffee open house will take place Saturday July 13 from 9:30am to 12:30pm during the Creston Farmers Market and GAIA cafe open hours. These other neighborhood hubs are located just a few steps outside the DAAC. Later that day the fun will continue up Plainfield road in Kingma's parking lot during Lions & Rabbits After Dark Creative Market from 5pm - 11pm.
An event at the nearby legal graffiti wall will be planned mid- July to create an image reading 'Justice for Patrick Lyoya'. Other artists are encouraged to attend the event, date/time tbd, to contribute social justice messages of their own or whatever else they feel compelled to add to the wall. For more information on the etiquette of adding your piece to the wall visit (https://www.instagram.com/graffitiwallgr) and check out the pinned post on going over other artists' work.
The closing celebration will take place on Tuesday July 30 from 6pm - 9pm, a weeknight for everyone who likes to get out of town on the weekends to enjoy Michigan summers! A magical midsummer night to bask in creative company, we will have some special treats in store and have time for you to interact with the art installation and get final bids into the auction to raise funds and awareness for a creative gem in our community.
Asiah, who starred in Grand Rapids based film, Miss Rainbow Magic (2022), was living in Atlanta when she had to move home due to the onset of Type 1 diabetes and now Retinopathy. The donations facilitated through the silent auction will help with her second eye surgery. Kate and her mom, Nikki, became friends during the hours spent sitting next to or across from each other as artisan vendors at the Fulton Street Farmers Market.
