The CPI(M) says it was formed at the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of India in Calcutta from October 31 to November 7, 1964. It describes its origin as a response to disputes over ideology and strategy inside the communist movement, especially around Marxism-Leninism and Indian conditions.
How to join CPI(M)
According to the party constitution, a person must be at least 18, live in India, accept the party programme and constitution, agree to work in a party organisation, pay dues, and carry out party decisions. New members are admitted through individual application with the recommendation of two party members.
After admission, a person is a candidate member for one year, during which the party checks their participation, discipline, and understanding of the party’s programme. The constitution also says every new member must sign a party pledge.
