Artists In-the-Round this month:
Richard Tillinghast
A Richard Tillinghast show involves award winning song writing, deft guitar and banjo work, and usually a healthy dose of off-beat humor. "He is a poet; he has traveled America and abroad with his senses open and attuned and has distilled many thoughts, impressions and feelings into beautiful, restless verse in song." (Dave Horner, Creative Loafing, SC).
Richard won fourth place in the 2024 Ozark Folk Festival songwriter contest. "He's been blessed with a unique voice...compared to everybody from Eddie Vedder to James Taylor. For us, it's a mixture of John Prine and John Stewart...a poet's ear and economy of expression, with a sweet spot for the telling phrase." (Rodger Nichols, The Dalles Chronicle, OR). “Through the years, he has quietly built a reputation for warm, welcoming shows...his music is a deep, healing well.” (Edge Magazine, SC).
Michael Berly
Michael Berly is a songwriter and performer from Portland, OR. He was born in Ohio, raised in Los Angeles, and has resided in Portland for almost 30 years now. He began writing songs as a kid, inspired by Johnny Cash, Elvis, and the Rock and Roll generation. He has written well over 100 songs and has put out 7 albums of original material. He has toured and performed in the US and Europe and is a founding member of the band The Old Yellers, which has been in existence since 2001, doing original Americana and Outlaw Country Rock and Roll. His most recent album entitled The Space Between is out now on vinyl, cd, digital download and most streaming services.
Elias Cohen
Elias Cohen needs songs to stay alive.
He reveres the songwriters who give texture to life, stylistically gravitating to those who view the guitar as duet companion from Mississippi John Hurt and Richard Thompson to Kristian Matsson and Jose Gonzales.
After stints playing bars in Chicago and New York, Cohen landed in the Pacific Northwest where his lyrics now draw from the quiet exhalation of the first autumn downpour.
Recent recordings include the LP 'All That’s Been Said' (2022) and EP 'In All That Noise' (2024) in which a chorus of acoustic instruments accompany Cohen’s lonesome voice.
