Artists In-the-Round this month: Desert Shame: Jodi Stevens and Shiggy Pop, Meridian and Charlotte

Desert Shame: Jodi Stevens and Shiggy Pop

Jodi Stevens and Shiggy Pop are the songwriting and guitar duo that represent half of Portland rockers, Desert Shame. Stevens and Pop are both long-time contributors to the local music scene, having separately been involved in many projects over the years. Through Stevens’ evocative songwriting and Pop’s stylish compliments on the guitar, the two deliver stripped down, captivating acoustic performances.

Charlotte Thistle

Called “the most uncompromising lyricist in music today” by Victory Music Review, Charlotte Thistle has released three CDs and received airplay on a bunch of folk radio music stations that no one here has probably heard of. She recently relocated to Portland from Seattle, where she lived for twenty years, raised her daughter and founded a children’s music program. She was a finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Contest in 2014, and is a regular at the Oregon Country Fair.

Meridian Green

Meridian Green is, as ever, fiercely committed to “building community through music” and working with “everyone to change everything” as we step back from the brink! Her Cascadia-Americana acoustic fusion moves to earthy rhythms through lively neighborhoods where the deeply personal lives next door to the purely fictional, flirting outrageously with the downright political.

Meridian grew up in Greenwich Village, daughter of folk music legend Bob Gibson, enchanted by the magic of live music. Her performing career began with the Gypsy Gulch International String Band playing Romanian czardas and world music. She left to start a solo career until West-Coast country rocker, ex-Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers member Gene Parsons joined her to form Parsons Green. They toured throughout the US, UK and Europe. She toured with the Fare-Thee-Wells, bringing her father’s musical legacy to the stage.

In addition to recording one solo and two duet albums, she is the co-inventor of the Parsons/Green StringBender now on exhibit at Guitars The Museum in Umea, Sweden. Her musical, entrepreneurial and community work has been featured in the New York Times, BBC Radio, Vintage Guitar and Dirty Linen.
