Sailortown regeneration are bringing the docks back to life.
Centred on St Joseph's church which the community fought hard to save, they have collected an archive of photographs and stories of this once thriving community
Sailortown is an inner City Community based in Belfast Docks.
It was Belfast’s first waterfront village with over 5,000 people packed into the small, cobblestoned streets of terraced houses between the docks and York Street. The men worked on the docks or went to sea. The women looked after large families and found work in the mills.
Devastated by the building of the M3 Urban Motorway 50 years ago, it is slowly coming back to life. With the iconic St Joseph’s Church, now in its 151st year, at its heart it epitomises the indomitable spirit of Belfast people. Immortalised through story and song it is working towards helping to build a better future for those in the surrounding area in North Belfast.
This highly informative guided walking tour by members of the Sailortown Regeneration Group will start inside St. Joseph’s Church, after which you will go outside to learn about Sailortown’s rich culture and heritage.
