Num grande compêndio da música eletrónica contemporânea, Tim Hecker terá direito a uma boa contribuição, recheada de sons de uma parte considerável da sua discografia. Com efeito, são vinte anos de álbuns que mudaram, várias vezes, o modo como ouvimos não só a sua produção musical como os próprios géneros onde os arrumamos: desde o borbulhar hertziano de Radio Amor até ao mergulho no mundo neo-clássico com Virgins, passando pelo nipónico Konoyo que trouxe até à Culturgest, em 2018, na companhia de Kara-Lis Coverdale e um pequeno ensemble gagaku. É a partir deste ponto no globo que Tim Hecker preparou o seu novo álbum, sabendo de antemão que o seu ponto de chegada é inesperado e, no fundo, o resultado de uma aventura pelo desconhecido. Talvez por isso, não se estranha que recentemente o tenhamos encontrado pelo Ártico, numa expedição de caça à baleia, com a banda sonora para The North Water, uma série para televisão co-produzida pela BBC. Porque a música de Hecker parece sempre apta a ocupar grandes espaços geográficos, culturais e psicológicos, atribuindo-lhes uma nova dimensão.

Any future compendium of contemporary electronic music will certainly include Tim Hecker and a considerable part of his discography – a body of work spanning twenty years and counting that repeatedly changed the way we listened to Heckler, and also the category where we placed his music; he went from the Hertzian fizziness of Radio Amor to Virgins, where he dove into the neo-classical form, and then came the Nipponese Konoyo, which he brought to Culturgest in 2018 joined by Kara-Lis Coverdale and a small Gagaku ensemble. His next album stemmed from the same geographical spot, though the final destination was bound to be an unexpected new spot, as befits an adventure into the unknown. It was therefore no surprise to find him next in a whaling expedition in the Arctic with his soundtrack for The North Water, a BBC co-production: Hecker’s music always semes to inhabit some vast geographical, cultural, or psychological territory, to which it unfailingly adds a new dimension.
