About this Event
Put on a tiger print morph suit and climb inside Sophie Chapman's ongoing, spiralistic research project - Tiger Helix (Oblivion). Grappling with the dissonance between a desire for change and the real transformation developing around us. How to feel more entangled with nature when you live in a tower block. What gay nature might help us with in the face of oblivion. There will be projections, spandex, improvisation, so much tiger print, cut out poems, dried nettles, looping sounds, giant cat ribbons and spirals. Come chat and play.
Sophie Chapman is an interdisciplinary artist and organiser from Newcastle, living and working in London. She makes experimental performance, drawing, video, music and writing. She makes her work in oscillation between playful solo-study, and taking the research questions live with others to test out. Turning them cellular, relational, stranger. Co-producing material that’s then further expanded, chopped, layered and collaged - coagulating something other from it again. Turning a drawing, into a performance score, into a video, into an installation and back again. She set up MINCE, a queer WIP night, to create sweaty, imperfect, collective space for testing live ideas. She is also Managing Director of the queer liberation ensemble F*Choir, and works as an access support worker - building politicised structures for collaboration and experimentation.
Strange Exchange Forum is a series of free creative workshops for and by artists working with alternative art education and creative learning.
The first iteration of the series explores themes around queer nature, embodiment and collective learning practices. Each artist will lead a session that draws connections to the library, sharing insight into their research and practice, asking what it means to learn and teach as an artist.
This event will take place in the Boxing Gym at French Street. This space has wheelchair access from the street with no power assisted doors. A wheelchair accessible toilet is available on the first floor, accessible by lift. Note: the lift is small (800mm wide doorway and 1100 x 1400 internal dimensions).
