TIERRA is an ode to freedom.
Please join Camila Montefusco for a free recital through a highly personal journey through various movements, with a Q&A with the artist at its conclusion. While the recital is free, seats are limited, so please reserve your free tickets on Eventbrite!
Through a collection of Ibero-American folkloric music, the performer invites her audience on a journey inspired by the stories of her ancestors. In a world of hardship, themes of fear, strength, love and hope guide the narrative of this intimate and universal tale.
‘Colonization’ invites the listener into the joys and sorrows of a rapidly changing world. Led by excerpts from Xavier Montsalvatge’s Cinco Canciones Negras, this section of the program follows the desire to find joy in the mundane amidst the harsh realities of a woman's life.
‘Fear’ captures a narrative drawn from Brazilian folk tales — a unique portrayal of Amazonian myths translated into music by composer Waldemar Henrique.
‘Strength’ calls for faith and spiritualism. From a quiet and intimate prayer set to music by composer Ernani Braga to honour the Afro-Brazilian Candomblé traditions, audiences are invited into a moment of reflection.
In the face of adversity, ‘Hope’ gives birth to a new life through the nursery rhymes of composers Blas Galindo, Alberto Ginastera, and Xavier Montsalvatge.
Featuring songs from the Cinco Canciones Populares Argentinas by Alberto Ginastera, ‘Freedom’ is the gateway to a new chapter where the excitement of a new beginning is unburdened by any concerns. This final section looks into future generations and the endless possibilities that hope can unfold in one's life.

Camila Montefusco is a storyteller at heart. Hailed for her “lush steady tone” (Stage Door), the Brazilian-born mezzo-soprano joins the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal in the 24/25 season. Past highlights include the roles of Goffredo in Handel's Rinaldo, Nada in Ana Sokolovic’s Svadba, La Zia Principessa in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, and Indiana Elliot in Thompson’s The Mother of Us All.
A current Emerging Artist with Pacific Opera Victoria and Opera on the Avalon, this season features her two first national tours in the artistic rosters of Prairie Debut and Debut Atlantic. As a co-founder of the Obsidiana Duo, Camila believes in the importance of Ibero-American musical culture and history. By bringing the music of historically marginalized composers to the stage, she strives to amplify the voices of communities that have long been silenced. Whether in opera or recital, Camila hopes to connect with people through art and inspire change in a world that hungers for it.
