Tide Over

‘Tide Over’ invites participants to contemplate what it means to ‘tide each other over’ in this political moment. We will explore questions of entanglement, interdependence, and care through reading and writing circles, workshops, and a slow walk. How do we nourish and sustain each other? What does ‘tiding over’ look like beyond survival? This one-day gathering is an invitation to dream, imagine, and explore other ways of being in relation, that are more long-lasting. What lessons do tides hold? What do they tell us about relating, time, and movement?

This one-day symposium is inspired by Chandra Frank’s ongoing creative research praxis on Tidal Politics and is her first inaugural public event as Taft Professor of Public Humanities.

Info: In this tidal reading circle, participants are invited to explore ideas of care, interdependence, and entanglement alongside currents, tides, and water. We will experiment with the performative qualities of sound, voice, and watery reverberations. This circle will be transformed into a collective "tiding over" soundscape.

Info: Learn the practice of herbal tea making. We will contemplate what it means to think about water as a connector, and how we can be in solidarity with plants, the soil, and each other. Everyone will make two restorative tea blends.

Info: What does it mean to trace the movement of currents, tides, and water? In this cyanotype workshop, interdisciplinary artist and ecologist, Julia O. Bianco will invite us to create our own cyanotypes using water, sunlight, shapes, and local organic materials.

Info: Join us for a closing reception featuring a loosely curated assemblage of "tidal" sounds, readings, clips, music, and collage-making.
