Tibor Baranski was a hero. Confronting the horrors of the Holocaust, he was credited with saving at least 3,000 Jewish men, women, and children from death at the hands of the Nazis. For this heroic work, Tibor was honored by Yad Vashem as a “Righteous Among the Nations,” their highest honor for gentiles who risked their own lives to save Jews. And in 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed him to The President’s Commission on the Holocaust, which recommended the opening of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Tibor had left his homeland after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and eventually settled in Buffalo, where he lived until his passing in 2019. Since that time, Tibor and his wife Katalin (who passed in 2011) are entombed in a private sarcophagus in Forest Lawn, prominently situated for ready public access among three of the cemetery’s Jewish, Christian, and non-sectarian burial sections. In 2022, a documentary about Tibor's remarkable story was made in Hungarian. Join us for an exclusive screening of this film (translated into English), followed by a discussion that will include some of Tibor's family members. Tickets are free and space is limited, so advance registration is required.
