Come celebrate the Khmer New Year with Kok Thlok!
The Kok Thlok Artists Association has been working to preserve and promote Khmer culture and arts since 2006. During the Khmer New Year festivities, Kok Thlok presents the legend of Preah Thinvong Neang Pew at the French Institute in the traditional form of Khmer song and dance: Yike theater.
Neang Pew, the eponymous character, is the youngest daughter of a king who rules in accordance with divine law. His kingdom is the most prosperous, and his daughters are married to the most handsome princes on Earth. But one day, the neighboring kingdom declares war on him. He gathers his sons-in-law and promises them that whoever defeats their enemies will become his successor. But defeats follow, and the king despairs. He thinks of Neang Pew, his daughter, so sensitive to the suffering of others, who had broken divine law and whom he had expelled from the Palace for giving her scarf to a leper.

Yike theatre is performed in almost every province of Cambodia and by the Khmer Krom communities of southern Vietnam. The stories in this type of theatre often deal with scenes from daily life or tales from the life of the Buddha. Today, the performances have gained popularity among Cambodian farmers and have evolved over time into a theatrical art form to promote the teachings of Buddhism and Brahmanism.

L’Association des Artistes Kok Thlok œuvre à la préservation et la promotion de la culture et des arts khmers depuis 2006. A l’occasion des festivités autour du nouvel an khmer, Kok Thlok présente, à l’Institut français, la légende de Preah Thinvong Neang Pew sous la forme traditionnelle du théâtre chanté et dansé khmer : le théâtre Yiké.
Neang Pew, personnage éponyme, est la fille cadette d’un roi qui règne dans le respect de la loi divine. Son royaume est le royaume le plus prospère, et ses filles sont mariées aux plus beaux princes sur Terre. Mais un jour, le royaume voisin lui déclare la guerre. Il réunit ses gendres et leur promet que celui qui terrassera leurs ennemis deviendra son successeur. Mais les défaites se suivent et le roi désespère. Il pense à Neang Pew, sa fille si sensible à la souffrance d’autrui, qui avait dérogé à la loi divine et qu’il avait expulsée du Palais pour avoir donné son écharpe à un lépreux.

Le théâtre Yike est joué dans presque toutes les provinces du Cambodge et par les communautés khmers Krom du sud du Vietnam. Les histoires de ce type de théâtre traitent souvent scènes de la vie quotidienne ou des contes tirés de la vie du Bouddha. Aujourd’hui, les performances ont gagné en popularité auprès des agriculteurs cambodgiens, et se sont transformées au fil du temps en une forme d’art théâtral pour promouvoir les enseignements du bouddhisme et du brahmanisme.
