About this Event

Thyrd Period: A Boozy Lecture Series — Unpacking Abolition

Welcome to Thyrd Period, a NEW boozy lecture series by Thyrd Space where curious minds gather for connection, conversation, and a splash of philosophy after hours.

For this three-part series (April 2, April 9, and April 16), we’re inviting guests back into the “classroom” for a lecture exploring abolition with Dr. Abbie Henson, Assistant Professor of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Arizona State University.

Across three sessions, Dr. Henson will guide us through abolition’s historical roots, the debates surrounding it, and what it asks us to reconsider about justice, harm, and accountability.

Each gathering blends a short lecture with interactive elements, small-group discussion, and reflection.

This isn’t your typical lecture. Expect thoughtful ideas, a relaxed atmosphere, and plenty of room to engage with others who enjoy learning together—drink in hand (mocktails welcome) and snacks nearby.

What to expect:
  • A lecture from Dr. Abbie Henson (ASU criminology professor)
  • Thought-provoking discussion exploring abolition as an idea and movement
  • Light reading, note-taking, and activations
  • Peer “class discussion” with fellow attendees
  • A relaxed BYOB salon-style environment: bring your beverage of choice while we provide light snacks and space to mingle

Come curious💡 Leave thoughtful 💭

Whether you’re new to the topic or already engaged in these conversations, Thyrd Period is a space to learn together, ask questions, and explore complex ideas in community!

Series Structure:

This is a three-part lecture series designed to build across multiple sessions and dates. You can attend one lecture or join in on the full series.

Part 1 — Foundations: What Do We Mean by Abolition? (April 2nd)

Through a short lecture, reflection prompts, and conversation with fellow guests, we’ll start unpacking the assumptions many of us hold about justice, punishment, and accountability.

Along the way, we’ll ask questions like:

What is justice?
Who gets labeled a “good” or “bad” person?
What might abolition actually ask us to reconsider?

Part 2 — Looking Closer: Understanding and Unpacking (April 9th)

In this gathering, we’ll dig deeper into several ideas and tensions within abolitionist thinking—exploring how different people interpret the concept, where debates emerge, and what alternatives to traditional systems might look like.

Part 3 — What Now? (April 16th)

Our final session turns toward the future.

After exploring the ideas and debates surrounding abolition, we’ll shift toward the bigger question: what comes next?
